In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
