The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.
Competitors will gain the right to challenge specific rulings from the official, following the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
